The Youth Energy Commission was started as a platform for sensitising the next generation about the energy and climate change space, and to encourage their involvement. YEC facilitates interaction between academia, industry and the government, and provides youth with opportunities to explore career prospects and familiarise themselves with the relevant industry and policy matters.

YEC was the official student partner for the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM4) hosted by the Government of India in 2013. CEM4 brought together ministers and representatives from many countries as well as global investors, and included an Innovation Pavilion showcasing the 40-50 most innovative companies (including early stage, growth stage and MNCs) in the energy sector. These included two nascent startups which had been selected by YEC to showcase their innovations at such a celebrated platform.

The first YEC chapter was started at IIT Kharagpur, and is now a self-sustained unit which has hosted a number of talks, competitions, networking events, and other engagement activities for the student community across Eastern India. Other chapters are similarly being started across Delhi, Bangalore, and other cities across the country.
